Our story
Vessel was born from my deep, enduring connection and love of the natural world and the ways it has shaped, healed and transformed me throughout my life.
I began my natural scent journey in my 20s, following studies in Interior Design that led me toward biophilia: the profound, instinctive connection between human beings and the living world around us, and how disconnected we can feel from it in our modern lives and homes. From the way a space is set up, to the way a scent can shift the entire feeling of a room, I became fascinated by how nature reaches us: visually, but also emotionally, physically, sensorially. I began blending for my own home, exploring the mood-altering intelligence hidden inside natural extracts and oils. Over the past decade, that curiosity has evolved into what Vessel is now.
Drawing from folklore, the art of perfumery and traditional aromatherapy - Vessel is an indie fragrance house built on meaning, intuition, and a genuine reverence for the natural world. We are a small, independent team who love what we do. Every blend is made in house, each one intuitively created to honour mood, emotion and energy. There is more to come, and we are building it slowly, intentionally - the way all good things grow.
Our ethics
Our love of plants is a responsibility to the natural world. We do not use any oils or extracts from threatened or endangered species, and if the status of any plant changes, our formulas change with it.
We source locally wherever we can, and globally from transparent, reputable supply chains. Every ingredient on our site lists its country of origin - because I believe you deserve to know where your products come from.
You won't find our bottles wrapped in unnecessary packaging destined for landfill. We keep our footprint light, minimal, reusable and considered. As Vessel grows, so does my ambition to give something meaningful back to the natural world and the communities we are part of.
How does natural scent work?
Every Vessel blend carries the intelligence of the plant it came from - not a copy of it, not a synthetic approximation - the real thing, directly extracted, distilled or cold-pressed from fruit, peel, bark, resin, flower or leaf.
This matters more than it might seem. Our limbic system - the emotional brain - can tell the difference between a natural and synthetic version of the same scent note. Only the natural version draws a response from the nervous system.
When a scent feels grounding, calming, uplifting or mood-altering this is what is actually happening:
- Your nose detects the scent molecule - instantly, before conscious thought.
- The signal travels directly to the emotional brain (the limbic system)
- The emotional brain signals the nervous system.
- The nervous system responds - depending on the scent, your brain releases calming or energising chemicals - like serotonin, dopamine or endorphins - to change how you feel.
This is why natural scent can trigger memory, ease anxiety, support sleep, deepen meditation, and change the feeling of a space. Smell is the only sense wired directly into emotion and regulation. To go deeper, read my journal post on olfaction and why natural scent matters.
