Olfaction & Choosing Natural Scent

Scent can evoke a whole spectrum of feelings and we believe that scent is an important part of ritual, healing, self-care, and the spaces we inhabit. We wanted to share the science behind natural scent & how it talks to our emotions & nervous system.

What is Olfaction?

When you breathe in a scent, tiny scent molecules travel up your nose and land on special receptors. This is your olfactory system. Think of it as a direct doorway from the outside world into your brain.

Unlike your other senses, smell skips the logical, thinking part of the brain and goes straight to the emotional centre - the limbic system. This is the part of you that stores memories, emotions, and survival responses. It includes areas like the amygdala (emotion) and hippocampus (memory).

That is why a scent can suddenly bring back a memory or shift your mood in seconds.

The limbic system speaks directly to your nervous system. And your nervous system is deeply connected to the vagus nerve - the long nerve that runs from your brain down through your heart, lungs and digestive organs. The vagus nerve helps regulate whether you feel calm and safe, or tense and alert.

So when a scent feels grounding, comforting or soothing, what is actually happening is this:

• Your nose detects the scent.
• The message travels straight to the emotional brain.
• The emotional brain signals the nervous system.
• The vagus nerve responds by slowing the heart rate, deepening the breath, and telling the body it is safe.

This is why natural scent can ease anxiety, support sleep, deepen meditation or create a sense of safety in a space. It works fast because smell is wired directly into emotion and regulation.

Why choose natural scent?

Natural scent connects you to the living plant it comes from.

Take cedarwood. The tree grows slowly, roots deep in the soil. When you inhale real cedarwood oil, you are breathing in the chemistry of that tree - and the body recognises it. Often bringing up feelings of grounding & stability.

Synthetic cedar might smell similar at first, but the experience stops at the nose. True cedarwood oil contains a complex profile of natural compounds - that communicate directly with our nervous system. These compounds help signal feelings of being grounded & safe in a way isolated aroma chemicals simply cannot replicate.

At Vessel, we work exclusively with natural plant extracts, essential oils and absolutes.

Every blend carries the full intelligence of the plant it came from, to support your mood, support your nervous system, and remind you that you are part of the natural world, not separate from it.
