Bibliomancy is a form of divination. It is the practice of seeking and receiving wisdom, synchronicity, and knowledge from books, and it is an artform rooted in ancient tradition. In ancient cultures, there were specific texts associated with this type of divination. Often these were accessed through a shaman or other spiritual leader with a direct connection to higher forces or divine wisdom. Someone would consult the shaman, who would then turn to the book for wisdom. It is a practice prevalent across most ancient societies, in one form or another, but my direct connection to it is through the Egyptian tradition – of which my father was born into. His aunt divined through tea leaves, he divined through dreams, and I divine through dreams, writing, and books.

Other sacred texts or books used specifically for divination cross-culturally include the I Ching, The Book of the Dead, The Book of Dreams, and Ibn Seerin's Dictionary of Dreams, to only cite a few. But the book does not need to be specifically designed for divination for it to hold an important message of wisdom or guidance. A book can become a tool for divination through our intention and our connection with it.
So how do we achieve this? In my personal practice, dreams and books are linked intimately and overlap often. But the practice of bibliomancy can be as simple as selecting a book from your bookshelf that feels like it is calling to you. It’s all in the impulse. A spine that you feel called to pull from the shelf. A closed book on your nightstand that you have a sudden urge to open. A section of a bookshop that draws you in instinctively. Perhaps the name of an author appears several times throughout your day, or a quote from a book finds you multiple times in a week, cueing you to seek out the source. There are many clues we are given on the daily that can lead us to the divine wisdom present within the pages of a book.
A simple bibliomancy practice you can adopt:
- Sit quietly, close down your eyes, and consider an intention. What would you like an answer to? Drop into that feeling.
- When you feel centred and open to finding your answer, look at your bookshelf. What spine immediately stands out to you? Don’t question it.
- Select the book and open it. Sometimes the book will fall open to a page, sometimes you will find yourself flicking through its pages, scanning words. But at some point during this process, whether immediate or through the act of discovery, a word or sentence will reveal itself to you. It will evoke something within you. And that is how you know you have found your answer.
