As the nights grow longer and the cooling hush of winter settles around us, we enter the domain of Nyx, the primordial Greek deity of night. Cloaked in shadow, she rides across the sky in a chariot, her billowing robe behind her. Born of Chaos and consort to Erebus, the embodiment of darkness, Nyx is rumoured to be the mother of the Fates. Her power is so immense that even Zeus is said to fear her.
But Nyx is not to be feared. Rather than bringing chaos, she brings clarity, and instead of destruction, she gifts us with deep rest. In winter, when her presence feels closest, she simply offers us an invitation to turn inward. To embrace sacred stillness and to listen closely to what’s beneath the surface of our busy lives.
Cyclical living, whether it involves attuning to the seasons, lunar phases, or the menstrual cycle (for those who menstruate), is a way of honouring the natural rhythms of the Earth. Winter draws us into one of these quieter cycles: a time of withdrawal, rest, and reflection. As the natural world slows, so too should we. Honouring this rhythm isn't indulgence; it’s remembrance. Like the trees and plants around us, we were never meant to bloom all year. Let this winter be a time to honour the presence of Nyx. Step outside under the moon and acknowledge her ancient aura. Give yourself permission to rest and turn inward, letting her darkness guide you.
