The Celebration of Evergreens During Midwinter

Yule, the ancient Norse celebration surrounding the winter solstice, is known for its themes of light, fire, and feasting, all in honour of the sun’s return. As many pagan festivities are, Yule is rich with symbolism: the Yule log, candles, deep reds and wild game. But in the lead-up to the longest night of the year, while bare trees and frozen landscapes dominated the outdoors, evergreens, alive and vibrant, became a powerful symbol of life's promise.

Unlike deciduous trees, evergreen species retain their needle-like leaves all year-round, allowing them to continue slow photosynthesis even during winter. Their wax-coated needles help conserve water and withstand freezing conditions, while their dark green colour absorbs more sunlight in low-light environments.

Fir, pine, holly, ivy, and mistletoe were often brought indoors throughout Europe during Yule, to decorate homes and gathering spaces during winter feasts and rituals. Some historians believe these plants were thought to offer protection from wandering spirits during the darker months, while others suggest they symbolised hope, fertility, and the sun’s returning warmth.

Over time, many of these traditions blended with Christian winter celebrations in the northern hemisphere, eventually evolving into the modern Christmas tree. Of course, here in the southern hemisphere, these seasonal traditions feel a little topsy-turvy (celebrating winter imagery in the middle of summer). Still, perhaps that only makes the symbolism of the evergreen more interesting. A reminder of steadiness, ritual, and nature’s cycles, no matter where we are in the world.

Decorating the home with evergreen branches, cooking hearty meals, and lighting candles can still feel deeply instinctive during the colder months, and practising small rituals that invite reflection and connection to the season around us can be incredibly grounding.

While we may not all have access to pine branches or holly wreaths, utilising scent made from true botanicals can be an accessible way to connect to our evergreen flora during the winter months.
