Plant Lore Series: Sandalwood

Sandalwood has been regarded for thousands of years as a sacred tree in spiritual and healing traditions across the world. In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, its smoke is said to carry prayers to the heavens. It’s used to anoint temples, altars, and the body before meditation; believed to still the mind and awaken spiritual awareness. In Ayurveda, sandalwood cools excess heat in both body and spirit, bringing balance to pitta, the fire element. It opens the heart, soothes the mind, and helps transform agitation into peace. Across cultures, the tree has come to symbolise devotion, protection, and the strength that grows through patience.

Sandalwood Lore

In Arabian and Persian lore, sandalwood smoke was thought to drive away wandering spirits and invite prosperity. In medieval Europe, it was listed as a wood of purification, used to clear stagnant energy and restore harmony to the home. Some folklore also tells us the tree reveals its fragrance only to those who approach it with reverence.

Energetically, sandalwood is aligned with both the root and heart chakras - connecting stability and love, grounding and compassion. In magical practice, it’s used in rituals of healing, consecration, and meditation, drawing awareness inward to the sacred self.

Sustainability

West Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) is a hemiparasitic tree, relying on the nutrients and water from surrounding host trees to grow. This native desert tree has learned that to survive, it must stretch its roots out meters under the red desert in search of the nutrients only a host tree can provide. Once the Sandalwood tree has depleted all available hosts the tree can not survive without a host tree and will eventually naturally die.

We use oil from the Dead wood of West Australian sandalwood, sustainably harvested and distilled. Each drop carries the memory of decades. Memories of the sun, soil, and rain all condensed into scent. You can find it in our blends Lover, Intuition and Grounded.
