Autumn's Muse: Artemis

Hear her in the trees, in the stirring of branches and the falling of autumn leaves. Smell her in the soil, damp and earthen, laced with the biting spice of herbs. She is wild and free; the huntress and the mother.

MINI MYTH

Artemis was born to the Titaness Leto, and she came into the world fierce and self-assured. A goddess of the wilderness, she existed as both guardian and hunter. She would spend her days roaming the forests, surrounded by a following of nymphs, taking only what was needed with her silver bow. Healer and nurturer, she always protected far more than she claimed.

As patron of wild animals, master of herblore, and guardian of women, Artemis guides childbirth, heals the vulnerable, and stands between women and the dangers imposed upon them. In her autonomy, she chose a life of chastity – a vow she upheld with the full force of the feminine rage that burned within her. When a hunter named Actaeon watched her bathing naked, uninvited, Artemis did not forgive. Instead, she turned him into a stag, and his own hounds tore him limb from limb.

There is no separation between nurture and wrath, for our autumn muse. To Artemis, both are sacred.

A RITUAL FOR ARTEMIS: SHINRIN-YOKU

Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” is a Japanese practice that involves spending time in nature and engaging the senses to support nervous system regulation and overall well-being.

Here, we use it as a way to connect with Artemis in the heart of her domain: the natural world.

Ritual Steps:

1. Choose your setting
Find a natural space that is accessible to you — a park, backyard, or even an indoor setting with a nature soundscape. As the weather cools, be sure to rug up and aim for comfort if outdoors!

2. Settle your body
Sit or rest in a comfortable position, on the ground, a log, a chair, or the couch. Feel your seat supporting you.

3. Engage the senses through scent
Spritz our Intuition Mist around yourself, take in full, deep breaths to connect with the fresh, herbaceous notes and the mugwort essence that offers a pathway to connect with your own deep wisdom.

4. Anchor the breath
Take a few natural breaths and allow your body to settle. There is no need to change your breath, just notice it.

5. Open awareness
Let your attention move outward. Keep your gaze soft or close your eyes.
Notice what you can feel: breeze on your skin, texture beneath you, temperature of the air.
Notice what you can hear: birds*, wind, distant sounds.

6. Receive, don’t control
This is not about clearing the mind. Let thoughts come and go while your attention rests in your surroundings. You are only here to notice.

*Note: Early morning and early evening are peak times for bird activity if practicing outdoors.
