When we think of meditation, it’s easy to picture the classic image of sitting in silence, eyes closed, trying to quiet our minds. But in truth meditation doesn’t have to fit a one-size-fits-all mould. It’s not about achieving perfection; it’s about finding the right moment and method that works for you.
Movement
Stillness can sometimes be found in motion. A stroll through nature offers a quintessential mindful-movement experience, but even the bustling city streets can be just as rewarding (it’s all about your mindset). Earbuds out and eyes up. Feel the soles of your feet connect to the footpath as you broaden your gaze, watching light and shadow interact in your visual field.
Sound
While quiet can often give us space to clear our minds, it’s not always an option, nor is it suitable for everyone. Notice every sound around you and allow them to come and go. Let go of control over what your consciousness perceives. Nature offers a complementary meditative soundtrack, from lapping waves to rustling leaves. But challenge yourself to try this in unexpected places. On public transport, commuting home from work, or sipping a cocktail at happy hour, waiting for your friend. Let the rumble of traffic and the chatter around you rise and fall. Acknowledge each sound, then let them go.
Intention
Acting with intention can be an incredibly rewarding and accessible daily form of meditation. You can find a pause from the busyness of your mind simply by focusing on the most mundane of tasks. As tempting as it is to pop on a podcast or background screen while doing chores, try using this time to be more mindful. Focus on your senses on the texture of a dishcloth, the smell of your surface spray, or the satisfying sight of a dust-free bench.
